Habitual Abortion

Normally, abortion is removal of fetus (before the placenta is fully formed) during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. But when a woman has three or more repeated miscarriage at a particular period of pregnancy, we call it habitual abortion. It is also called recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) or recurrent miscarriage. This can greatly affect emotional wellbeing of a woman who may suffer from severe grief, guilt or depression.

Symptoms of Habitual Abortion
Two common symptoms of habitual abortion are labour-like pain and bleeding. Due to bleeding the ovum gets separated from the uterus leading to triggering of uterine contraction. In subsequent weeks, if the fully formed fetus dies in the uterus, it may lead to maceration (disintegration of fetus). As a result the abdomen of the mother becomes filled up with blood and other matters, leading to inflammation of reproductive organs.

Causes of Habitual Abortion
There are various causes of habitual abortion. It can be due to contraction of uterus, cervical incompetence, chromosomal disorders such as translocation, endocrine (thyroid) disorder, thrombophilia (tendency to develop blood clots), chronic constipation (leading to inflammation and congestion of uterus and autointoxication), usage of certain drugs, such as antibiotics, painkillers, tranquilizers, etc. Habitual abortion can also result from excessive mental anxiety or excitement, sexual intercourse, syphilis infections, incompatibility of blood between husband and wife, systemic disorders in the mother like diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic nephritis, etc.

Treatments of Habitual Abortion
Uterine infection, hormonal imbalance and chronic constipation can be treated with natural remedies. However, for congenital uterine malformation surgery can be the only option.

In case of constipated colon, warm water enema can give considerable relief. This may relieve pressure from the uterus as well as the bowels. Taking cold hip bath every day for 10 minutes can also give relief from inflammation of uterus. It is also suggested that women with a prior history of habitual abortion may want to be extremely cautious with diet and take adequate rest, whenever it is needed. They can refrain from taking refined carbohydrates, oily food, smoking or chewing tobacco products, coffee and tea as these may worsen constipation symptom.
