Causes & Symptoms Of Toxemia In Pregnancy

Toxemia is pregnancy induced hypertension. On a rough estimate, about 7% of the pregnant ladies have mild toxemia. But if it becomes severe then it may cause many health problems.

Toxemia starts developing as soon placenta begins to develop. The disease of toxemia occurs during first time pregnancy. The major cause of toxemia is not yet known and it is not possible to screen toxemia prior to pregnancy. The symptoms of toxemia include elevated blood pressures, protein in urine, hyper – reflexia.

Causes Of Toxemia:
The major cause of toxemia is not yet known. But few of them might include:

  • Septicemia
  • Bacteremia
  • Local bacterial infection like- Diphtheria, tetanus, toxin shock syndrome.

Toxemia is generally formed due some kind f infection in blood. Some of the health problems related with toxemia can be dangerous both for the mother and the baby. Beside high blood pressure, toxemia can damage your liver or kidney. Even the total failure of both organs is also possible.

The continuous increase in blood pressure can even result in stroke of heart; which is harmful for both the mother and her baby.

Toxemia Symptoms:
The major symptoms for toxemia are discussed below:

  • Fever
  • Hypotension
  • Rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Myalgia
  • Mucosal inflammation
  • Disorientation
  • Confusion
  • Hallucination
  • Tachycardia
  • Pharyngitis
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Multisystem dysfunction

Apart from these women will have headaches, dizziness, blurring of vision, sweat in hands and feet, puffiness on face, diminished urine and casts and albumin in urine. Any of these symptoms can detect toxemia. These can be reduced by following these steps:

  • Drink a lot of water or lemonade
  • Take a mild cathartic
  • Avoid eating much of meat and other high protein diet.
