Neck Pain Pregnancy

Neck pain and back pain are most common discomforts which pregnant ladies suffer. They become more active when pregnant lady tries to sleep. Neck pain and back pain disrupts the life of pregnant ladies severely. They cannot have a sound sleep even during night.

Causes of Neck Pain During Pregnancy:
There many known factors which can cause neck and back pain during the period of pregnancy. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Increase in levels of hormones: During pregnancy period, the level of hormones increases to a great extent which results in pain. The reason is that high level of hormone concentration in blood leads to shifting of joints and loosening of ligaments which results in neck and back pain. One such hormone is ‘Relaxin’. Relaxin has dramatic impact during pregnancy. The function of Relaxin is to make ligament associated with birth and pelvis aperture itself, softer and more pliable.
  • Change in position of ‘Center Of Gravity’ in body: During the period of pregnancy, uterus grows and weight shifts forward as the result center of gravity changes. As utrine ligaments are relaxed now, they create an impact on spine and other muscles surrounding them.
  • Obesity: Obesity has always remained a major cause for back pain, and during pregnancy it is the major factor. It is the time when pregnant ladies gain extra weight which creates problem of neck and back pain.

Treatment Of Neck Pain During Pregnancy:
Neck pain during pregnancy must not be ignored. There are few basic things which can be followed to avoid them and to reduce the intensity of pain.

  • Do not sleep with too many pillows. If necessary you can have one cervical support pillow.
    In order to sleep comfortable you can put two pillows under your knees. This will provide relief to your back directly. A product knee elevator can be placed directly under your knees.
  • You can ice your neck daily. This will prevent your neck from itching and reducing pain to great extent.
  • Neck stretching exercise is also another important method. Make it your daily routine to do some exercise for stretching your neck and back. Some crunches and pelvic tilt, until your latter stages of Pregnancy.

OMG I hear ya! I had pain everywhere. I used a bucky lumbar pillow (baxter i think they call it) and a bucky buckwheat pillow (don’t recall the names of them) and they REALLY helped me.

When I was pregnant, I did not have much problem with my neck because I started neck exercises (along with other exercises) right from the beginning of my pregnancy. Prevention is better than cure, no doubt.
