Chlamydia infection is one of the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). It is caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis. It affects the human genitalia and eye. It is the most common type of STD. According to an estimation, about 1 million people are infected with Chlamydia in the US. Chlamydia infection is transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Signs of Chlamydia Infection In Men & Women:

• Chronic pelvic pain
• Difficulty to concieve
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Unusual vaginal bleeding
• Abnormal vaginal discharge
• Pain in abdomen
• Painful sexual intercourse
• Frequent fever
• Nausea
• Painful urination
• Increase in urge to urinate
• In case of anal intercourse, inflammation of rectum is common.
• Throat infection and sore throat are common in Oral sex.

How Does Chlamydia Cause Infertility ?
It is called “Silent Epidemic” in women. It does not cause any symptoms in 75% of cases. It can live for months and even years inside the body. Then it passes through the cervix to infect the fallopian tubes. This leads to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Scar tissues are formed around the fallopian tube. This leads to blockage of the fallopian tube. The fallopian tube hence cannot pick up egg during ovulation. This leads to infertility in Women. Chlamydia is estimated to have caused infertility in 25% of all cases of chlamydia infection.

If left untreated, the infection may spread to the testicles causing epididymitis in men. This can lead to sterility in males if not treated within 6 to 8 weeks.

Treatment For Infertility Due To Chlamydia:
Early detection can cure the infection. Sexual intercourse should be restricted till the completion of the treatment.

• Azithromycin
• Doxycycline
• Tetracycline
• Erythromycin
