Pregnancy Bloody Show

Throughout pregnancy, a mucus plug blocks the cervical opening to prevent the entry of bacteria into the uterus. But before labor, this cervical mucus plug is expelled in order for the cervix to open. This occurs to prepare for the passage of the baby through the birth canal.  The pregnancy bloody show is an indicator that labor is imminent. The passage of this bloody show, which is a stringy mucus discharge that is tinged with brown and pink blood, is an indicator that labor could be hours, days or at most a week away.

The pregnancy bloody show is a sign that your cervix is effacing or dilating. This is one definite sign that you are well on your way toward labor and delivery. The bloody show is not evident in all pregnancies but occurs when the blood vessels in the cervix rupture as the cervix opens up. If you have experienced this cervical bloody show, then you can expect to go into labor within the next few days. Generally, it means that you are beginning the labor process, but you will have to wait until you begin the painful labor contractions to head for the hospital. So, when you see this bloody show, get ready for labor.

What You Need to Do

All you need to do is to keep an eye on the discharge. If the discharge is brownish colored, then there is nothing to worry about. If you want to talk to your doctor, then you can call or else you can talk to your doctor at your next visit. However, if the discharge becomes red and bright colored or if the amount is more than an ounce, then it could be a sign of danger. In such cases, you need to talk to your healthcare provider immediately. These can be signs of complications occurring in the placenta, like a placental abruption or previa.

Therefore, a pregnancy bloody show is a positive sign of pregnancy but if you observe fresh bleeding, then consult your healthcare professional immediately.
