Dietary Precautions During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman has to be extra careful and safe in her food choices, not only for her health but also for the health of her unborn baby. There are many dietary precautions to take during pregnancy.  These include eating properly cooked food and avoiding certain foods that can cause harm to the fetus. There are so many changes that take place during pregnancy and some foods that had no side effects before pregnancy can cause a number of harmful effects when a woman is pregnant. This is why pregnant women are advised to take certain dietary precautions.

Here are some of the foods that you need to be cautious of before consuming:

  • Fish and other Seafood

Seafood contains high amounts of mercury that can cause harm to the unborn baby. It is one of the foods to be avoided during your pregnancy. Specific fish to avoid are tile fish, shark and swordfish.

  • Alcohol

Alcohol intake during pregnancy can lead to a health disorder called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). In this syndrome, the unborn babies may develop unusual facial features or have learning disabilities.   They can also have delayed growth. The best way to avoid such complications is to stop consuming alcohol during pregnancy or when trying to get pregnant.

  • Caffeine

There are many side effects that caffeine can produce like anxiety, altered heartbeat, nervousness, irritability and insomnia. If a pregnant woman consumes caffeine during pregnancy in large amounts then she may suffer from these symptoms, which can be harmful to the health of the baby. Avoid high intake of coffee, tea, chocolate and other caffeinated drinks during pregnancy.

  • Food Handling

Pregnant women must eat properly cooked food because eating uncooked foods can cause infections. These infections occur as a result of bacteria, viruses or parasitic organisms found in uncooked food. This can cause food poisoning which harms both the mother and the baby. A pregnant woman must also drink milk that is pasteurized.

These are some of the dietary precautions to be taken during pregnancy to avoid complications and have a healthy pregnancy.
