Upper back pain is a common occurrence in the late stages of pregnancy because of an enlarged uterus. The uterus stretches upward, which makes it difficult to breathe. There are many tips for managing upper back pain in the third trimester of pregnancy which include maintaining good posture, relaxing, and using belts for support.   • Drink lots of fluids to flush out toxins which can reduce the frequency of urinary tract infections. These can also cause back pain so drink lots of water.
  • Do not bend over to pick anything up. Instead squat and take, as it reduces pressure on the back. Stop lifting heavy things which can be harmful to you and your baby. Get plenty of rest and avoid sitting or standing for a long period. Elevate your legs while sleeping and avoid sleeping for excessive periods.
  • Use a belt under the guidance of a doctor as this can relieve your upper back pain to some extent. Again, consult your doctor before using any belt.
  • Stop wearing shoes with higher heels, as they do not give enough support to the back. High heels can affect your posture by elevating back pain.
  • Roll to the side when getting out of bed. Dangle your legs over the side of the bed and then get up slowly.
  • Make sure you sit on a chair that supports your back and place a pillow behind your back. When you want to stand, rest your foot on the footstool and keep changing the position of your feet.
  • Apply heating pads to your back as it provides relief from the pain.
  • An ice application or cold compress is another way to reduce back pain.
  • Getting a back massage is another helpful way to reduce pain.
  • Exercises like walking and swimming help make your back stronger. You can even try aerobic exercises and ¬†pelvic tilt exercises which strengthen and stretch,¬† etc. Consult your doctor before starting any exercise regimen.
