Headache Home Remedy in Pregnancy

Headaches are the most common complaint during pregnancy, especially the migraines and tension headaches.. Tension headaches are characterized by a steady aching pain in the back of the head or a squeezing sensation behind the eyes. Signs of  migraines are a throbbing pain on one side of the head along with nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light and noise. Women who suffer from frequent headaches before getting pregnant may find that this problem worsens during pregnancy. Pregnancy headaches are very common during the first and second trimesters. During the first trimester, tension headaches are caused due to fluctuation in hormones.

Headache Remedies in Pregnancy

The best headache remedy in pregnancy is prevention. Some of the other ways are:

  • Maintain good posture and get plenty of sleep.
  • Enjoy and do activities that are relaxing.
  • Exercise regularly and eat balanced and frequent meals. This maintains your blood sugar levels.
  • Put a warm or cool compress on the base of your neck or the forehead.
  • Take a warm shower and lie down in a dark room. Do not take a hot shower or sit in hot Jacuzzis as this could overheat mom and baby.
  • Enjoy a shoulder and neck massage.
  • According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnant women should not take over-the-counter painkillers. They could be dangerous for baby. Ask the doctor which medicines are okay to take.
  • Avoid the intake of foods that trigger headaches like aged cheese, chocolate, peanuts, preserved meat, sour cream and yogurt.
  • Mix clove powder in one teaspoon of cinnamon oil. Apply this to the location of pain.
  • Melt a few drops of butter, place it on the palm and mix with pieces of saffron. After rubbing it for two minutes, remove the saffron. Put two drops of butter in each nostril.
  • Mix half a teaspoon of ginger powder with one tablespoon of milk. Drop two drops into each nostril.
  • Cut a lime in half and rub it on the forehead.
  • If headaches are caused from the sun, mix some henna flowers with vinegar. Dip a cloth in the vinegar and henna flower mixture and lay cloth on the head. This remedy will give instant relief.

These are some of the simple and effective headache remedies in pregnancy. Talk to the doctor if the headaches persist or become immobilizing.
