Tips to Surviving the First Trimester of Pregnancy

The first months of pregnancy bring a whole new meaning to the word change in a woman.  Severe mood swings, tender breasts, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, constipation, frequent urination and sleep problems are the most common changes. This is mainly caused by an increase in hormones like hCG (the pregnancy hormone) and progesterone. However, smells can also trigger the feelings of nausea and vomiting. Thankfully, the first trimester of pregnancy is the worst for these symptoms and should mostly subside after the trimester is completed. In the meantime, follow some of these tips to make it through the difficult times.

Tips for Survival in First Trimester of Pregnancy

  • Rest whenever possible as fatigue can worsen the symptoms of pregnancy.
  • Make an effort to go to bed at the same time every night as this helps the body get on a regular schedule.
  • Keep hydrated during the day. Try to avoid fluid intake during the evenings to cut down on the bathroom visits.
  • Fight nausea by keeping crackers in a purse and eat them often to prevent sickness because of an empty stomach. Keep crackers on the nightstand to combat morning sickness upon waking.
  • Always sleep on the side (left is best for proper circulation). Use pillows under the belly, between the knees and at the back to make sleeping more comfortable. This will be more useful as the months go on and the belly gets larger.
  • Get in some exercise. It just makes a person feel better.
  • Rely on friends and family to help when feeling poorly.
  • Leave caffeine behind. It can aggravate the symptoms.
  • If smoking and drinking has been part of life to this point, it is time to quit. Stopping immediately or weaning oneself off will work. Just be good to the body and the baby.
