Tips for Pregnancy Heartburn Relief

Most women suffer from heartburn during pregnancy. Though it is common and harmless, it can be quite uncomfortable. Heartburn is also called acid reflux or acid indigestion. The pain usually extends from the breastbone to the throat. It is mainly caused by physical and hormonal changes in the body. There are many ways to relieve heartburn.

Tips for Heartburn Relief during Pregnancy

You may not be able to eliminate heartburn, but you can control it to some extent. Here are some simple tips for relieving from heartburn:

  • Avoid consuming beverages and food that causes gastrointestinal problems. The usual foods that cause problems with the digestive tract are alcohol, chocolate, highly seasoned foods, fried and fatty foods, spicy, processed meat, vinegar, and mustard, caffeine and acidic foods like tomatoes, vinegar, citrus fruit and juices.
  • Never eat large meals. Instead eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. Chew food slowly and take your time eating.
  • Avoid consuming large amounts of water during meals as it can distend your stomach. Sip fluids between meals.
  • You can try chewing gum after meals as it helps in the stimulation of salivary glands that helps neutralize stomach acids.
  • Do not eat at bedtime or close to bedtime. Eat two to three hours beforehand before you lie down.
  • Elevate your upper body when you sleep as it helps the stomach acids from rising into the mouth resulting in acidity.
  • Gain the required amount of weight and stay within the health care providers guidelines.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing and do not wear anything tight around the waist.
  • When you have to lift anything, bend at the knees instead of the waist.
  • Do not smoke as it contributes to many dangerous problems and increases stomach acids.
  • Check with your health care provider before taking any antacids.

If these simple tips do not give relief from pregnancy heartburn then consult your health care giver for further treatment.
