Sleeping Positions in Pregnancy

During pregnancy, you may find yourself wrestling for comfort as you lie in bed trying to fall asleep. Your regular sleeping positions may not help you to get sleep with a big belly in the way. During pregnancy, your body undergoes many changes and these changes can be a reason for a disturbed sleep. Some of the reasons include heartburn, increased pain in the abdomen, shortness of breath, back pain and insomnia. However, there are some sleeping positions in pregnancy, which can grant you a quality night’s sleep. Try these sleeping positions in pregnancy to get some much-needed rest.

Best Sleeping Positions in Pregnancy

  • The most comfortable position is “SOS” that is to “Sleep on Side”. The best position for a pregnant woman is the left side.
  • This position increases the supply of nutrients and blood to the placenta, which gives nourishment to your baby. Keep your knees and legs bent and then place a pillow between the legs.
  • If you have problems lying on your back then use, “SOS” position and try keeping a pillow under the abdomen as well.
  • If you suffer from heartburn during the nighttime, try propping up your upper body with pillows.
  • In the later stages of pregnancy, you could experience shortness of breath. To relieve this, you can lie on one side or propped up by using pillows.

These may not work for some people if you have the habit of sleeping on the back or stomach. However, one thing that you can do is try out these positions and you may see that it could work for you. You can change your positions depending on your convenience and comfort. Avoid sleeping on the stomach but instead sleep to the left side as it has many benefits for you and the baby.
