Losing Weight after Having a Baby

It is normal to carry additional weight after the baby is born, but there are several things to consider when you are planning to shed that post pregnancy weight. Here are ten tips to losing weight after the birth of your baby.

Ten tips to help you lose post-pregnancy weight

  • Drink plenty of water – at least 8 glasses of water everyday – and avoid beverages that are high in sugar. If you do not like the taste of water, try adding fresh lemon juice to it. You can also try flavored seltzer water, as many are without calories.
  • Keep some healthy snacks like popcorn, nuts, raisins, and wheat crackers and stop buying junk food as it can be tempting.
  • Chicken breasts provide a low-fat source of protein when baked instead of fried.
  • Consume whole grains like breads, pastas and cereals instead of the white versions.
  • Never get fooled by food products that are labeled as non-fat because some of them are loaded with calories and have high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are not healthy.
  • Try to resist the urge to indulge in a fast food meal and if you get tempted, then order a salad: not the fatty fries and burgers.
  • Start light exercise as soon as you feel ready, if the weather is permitting, then go for a 10 minute walk and slowly increase the time to 20 minutes every day. Babies can be worn in a sling or a baby stroller. After 6 weeks, your doctor will exam you to make sure you can start exercising more actively.
  • Try and find ways to increase your exercise by parking your car far away or start using stairs instead of elevators.
  • Join a gym where they may offer babysitting services.

It took 9 months to gain the excess weight, so it is normal to expect it to take that long to lose it. It does not have to be difficult if you remember to exercise consistently, make the right food choices, and change your lifestyle for the better.
