30 Weeks Pregnant and Fetal Development

You are now in your 30 weeks of pregnancy and your baby is approximately 39 cm from head to toe. From this week onwards, your baby’s growth length-wise slows down but you can see tremendous weight gain. Every baby develops differently and this information is just to give you a general idea of how the fetus grows in the uterus.

Significant Changes in the Fetus

Some of the changes in the fetus that you can see are:

  • Your baby may weigh about 2 lbs. 13oz. this week.
  • The length from the head to the toe is 39 cm.
  • The head is around 3.5 inches in diameter.
  • The feet are about 2.5 inches long.
  • The wrinkled skin becomes smoother now.
  • The testicles have moved down to the groin in males.
  • The baby has the ability to control its own body temperature.
  • The baby’s brain develops at an amazing speed from this week onwards.
  • The ultra-fine hair called, lanugo, starts to slowly disappear but patches on his or her shoulders and back may remain.
  • Until this point, in time, the baby has gotten his nourishment from the mother through the lifeline of the umbilical cord. But now, the bone marrow is responsible for the production of red blood cells.
  • These red blood cells remove waste and supply oxygen to the fetus.
  • Your baby has started to store calcium, iron and phosphorus.
  • Eyebrows and eyelashes are developed fully and the hair on the head becomes much thicker.
  • Head and the body are in good proportion.
  • Hands are fully formed along with fingernails.
  • If you observe your ultrasound report then you can find your baby grasping their own feet or hand.
  • The baby opens and closes his eyelids and makes rapid eye movements.

Changes in the Mother

Some of the changes seen in mother are:

  • You could experience slight swelling of the ankles and feet. If the swelling is mild then it will reduce after the baby is born,  but if it is severe then consult a doctor.
  • Your uterus is four inches above the umbilicus.
  • As you have 10 weeks until the birth of the baby, your fetus, placenta and uterus will grow.
  • From this time you will start gaining approximately one pound per week.

These are some of the changes that take place in 30 weeks of pregnancy. With 10 weeks left, pregnant women need to continue to take extra care of themselvesso that they can continue to have a healthy and happy pregnancy.
