33 Weeks into Pregnancy – Fetal Development

It is 33 weeks of your pregnancy and the baby seems to be occupying half of your body. The baby is growing rapidly, and you have visions of birth and labor. In the 33rd week of pregnancy, your baby is concentrating on weight gain and the amniotic fluid level is at its highest.. The brain of the baby is maturing and increasing in size. The baby’s skin color starts changing from red to pink because of fat accumulation.

By this week, your uterus is 5 inches above the naval. The normal weight gain by this week is 28 pounds and some women gain more weight than this. This is mainly due to the rapid growth of the baby. and most of the babies have a weight gain of 5-9 ounces every week from the 33rd week. Pregnant women might suffer from edema of the feet and hands. A doctor should be consulted if the edema is severe.

Fetal Development in the 33rd Week

Some of the observable changes are:

  • The development of lungs takes place as the respiratory system is almost mature and formed. So, even if you have a premature delivery there are chances that your baby’s lungs  are healthy, but the baby may be treated in a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).
  • The baby can detect light and can differentiate between night and day. The eyes dilate and constrict in response to light rays.
  • The bones of the skull are not fused yet. This is to allow the bones to overlap making the passage of the head through the birth canal during the delivery of the baby.
  • The baby gains weight at the rate of approximately ½ pound every week.
  • The baby is about 4 ½ pounds and is 17.5 inches long.
  • If the baby is a male, the testicles descend into the scrotum.
  • The baby has a normal waking and sleeping pattern.
  • When sleeping the baby may experience a rapid eye movement, which is also the dreaming phase.
  • The baby can feel and listen to everything that happens outside the womb. This is the reason that pregnant women are advised to listen to soft music. This does have a positive impact on the unborn baby.

These are some of the significant changes that take place with the baby during the 33rd week of pregnancy.
