Are Antihistamines Safe During Pregnancy?

Getting sick during pregnancy can be an uncomfortable experience because many pregnant women try not to take any medication during pregnancy. But not all medication is bad during pregnancy. Antihistamines are safe to use as directed during pregnancy.

Tips for the Safe Use of Antihistamines During Pregnancy

  • Consult your doctor before taking any type of antihistamine, supplements, vitamin or herbal remedies. A doctor will help you determine if the benefits of antihistamines outweigh the risks of the medication.
  • Avoid the use of any medication(including antihistamines) in the first trimester. This is the phase where the baby’s major systems and organs start developing. It may be safer to take medications during the later stages of pregnancy.
  • Choose an antihistamine that is approved for pregnant women.
  • Try to increase your fluid intake when you are taking these drugs, because these drugs can cause dryness of mouth and nose.
  • Take the correct dosage according to your doctor’s recommendations. Some antihistamines can mimic the hormone oxytocin and in high doses can lead to the induction of labor. This is a dangerous situation for both mother and baby.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you notice any changes in the frequency of the baby’s movements when you are using antihistamines during pregnancy.
