Options for Terminating a Pregnancy

An unplanned pregnancy can change lives. Many women facing an unplanned pregnancy may want to consider terminating the pregnancy. There are two medical options for the safe termination of pregnancy:

1.    Surgical Abortion

  • This procedure is also called a vacuum aspiration and is the most common type of pregnancy termination.
  • It takes a few minutes and is safe, effective and less painful.
  • A gynecologist inserts medical instruments into the cervix and removes the fetus from the uterine lining.
  • This can be done up to 12 weeks of pregnancy and in some women can be performed later depending on her condition.
  • Some of the common side effects include spotting or bleeding and menstrual cramp-like pain.
  • A follow up visit is a must as doctors have to check to make sure all the material in the uterus has been removed.
  • Many choose this type of abortion because they are quick.
  • According to the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, there is less bleeding resulting from this type of abortion than when compared to chemical abortions.

2.    Chemical Abortion

  • Medication or pills may be given by a gynecologist to the women up to nine weeks of pregnancy.
  • Some choose this type because it allows women to recover at home instead at a clinic or hospital.
  • The doctor will provide a medication, usually in pill form, which needs to be taken immediately.
  • After a few days another dose is given and after taking this you may experience bleeding and cramping like that of a heavy menstrual period.
  • Bleeding and mild spotting may be there for up to one to two weeks afterwards.
  • After two weeks, a follow up visit to a doctoris necessary to make sure the abortion was successful.
  • Many women choose this type of abortion as it helps them to terminate pregnancy in private and they feel like natural miscarriages than surgery.
