Hot Flashes during Pregnancy

Hot flashes during pregnancy

Hot flashes during pregnancy occur mainly because of fluctuations in hormone levels. Common symptoms of hot flashes include intense heat sensations in the upper parts of the body with increased sweating; heart rate; and flushing of the face, neck, chest, and other parts of the body. Hot flashes during pregnancy are normal and common and may last between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. The frequency of hot flashes differs from woman to woman – some get hot flashes constantly while others may only have one or two or none at all through their entire pregnancy.

Causes of Hot Flashes

Hot flashes occur mainly in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Some of the causes include:

  • Changes in Hormone levels:

During pregnancy, a woman’s hormones, especially progesterone and estrogen, fluctuate regularly. The drop of estrogen in pregnant women is the main cause of hot flashes. Also, high progesterone levels cause joints and ligaments to loosen. These hormonal changes during pregnancy are the main cause of hot flashes.

  • Changes in Body Temperature:

A pregnant woman has an increased core temperature and metabolic rate. Core temperature is regulated by an increase in the skin’s blood flow and skin surface expansion. Pregnant women are advised to wear breathable clothing, use fans while doing indoor activities, avoid exercising when the weather is hot or humid, and use swimming as their major form of exercise. The bodily changes in a pregnant woman may lead to stress, which results in the release of nor-epinephrine and epinephrine in the blood stream. Increased blood flow and body temperature during pregnancy, along with hot weather, commonly leads to hot flashes.
