It’s very important for you to understand what may happen during pregnancy as this helps you know which symptoms require discussion with your doctor.  You can recognize the symptoms,as you enter the first trimester of pregnancy, better known as the first three months of pregnancy. During this time your body undergoes many changes, so prepare yourself to quit smoking and avoid drinking as these habits can cause harm to your baby.

Changes in the Mother during the First Month

Week-by-week changes occur in the mother during the first month. The first prenatal visit is one of the most comprehensive of all the remaining visits during your pregnancy. The week-by-week changes include:

  • Week-1:

Most of the women are not conscious of the day they ovulate. Pregnancy is counted from the first day of a women’s last period. That period will be the last for at least the next nine to ten months. As many women remember the day the period started, it helps in determining the due date for the upcoming birth. The average pregnancy lasts for 40 weeks from the first day of the last period. Immediately begin improving your dietary intake with vitamin and folic acid supplements.

  • Week-2:

In this the last period is finished and now the uterus is building a new layer of endometrium to cushion and nourish the soon to be conceived baby. One of the ovaries is growing rapidly and ripens an egg, preparing for ovulation. There is an increase in estrogen levels, and many women find they are at their peak level of creativity and energy during this week.

  • Week-3:

In this week, a woman excretes very high levels of hormones making them even more sexually attractive than usual. Ovulation takes place during this week.An egg is released, and this is swept up by the bell shaped end of the fallopian tube and moves towards the uterus. After intercourse, fertilization takes place and a woman conceives. The progesterone levels increase, which stops the menstrual cycle allowing the pregnancy to continue. The fertilized egg moves down to the uterus from the fallopian tubes and implants in the wall of the uterus. A woman may experience bloody spotting during the implantation.

  • Week-4:

This week you may find some changes like a metallic taste in the mouth but no one knows the reason for this.  Studies show this might be because of the changes in the hormone levels. Do not take medications without consulting your doctor. Mood swings and fatigue are the most common symptoms that you may experience in this week. Enjoy every week as pregnancy itself is a wonderful experience.
