For many women who are unable to have a family on their own, surrogacy is the best option available. Couples who cannot bear their own children due to various reasons opt for surrogacy.   • The process of carrying a child to full term and then giving the baby to someone else is known as surrogate motherhood.
  • The child may or may not be genetically related to surrogate mother because there are two types surrogacy–one is gestational and the other one is traditional.
  • In gestational surrogacy, the eggs as well as the sperm get extracted from the intended parents and then are transferred to the surrogate’s womb. In traditional surrogacy, the intended male sperm and surrogate’s egg are artificially inseminated in the surrogate.
  • Before opting for surrogacy, evaluate yourself properly. Ask yourself several questions. Why you are opting for surrogacy, are your family members supporting your decision, are you able to accept the fact that the child will not be yours and you have to give the child up as soon as the child is born?  If you are able to answer these questions, then you can opt for surrogacy.
  • You must also be aware of the requirements of the surrogate mother, such as you should be physically and mentally fit, you should be more than 18 years old, you should be able to undergo psychological and physical tests and you should not have a history of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • In order to become a surrogate mother, you must be aware of the laws and rights of a surrogate mother. The rights vary from state to state. Learn about these laws according to the state in which you are residing.
  • Between you and the intended parents a legal form will be signed. This form will state all the terms and conditions. This statement will also discuss medical and financial expenses, which are taken care of by the intended parents.
