During pregnancy, many women experience low blood pressure. Cardiovascular changes can lead to this decrease in blood pressure. While pregnancy is considered to be one of the most joyful times in a women’s life, experiencing low blood pressure during pregnancy can make the phase difficult.

Moreover, low blood pressure during pregnancy can be a serious problem if left untreated. During pregnancy, a woman’s cardiovascular system undergoes a number of changes. There is an increase in the amount of blood and the heart rate also increases which leads to variation in the blood pressure. According to doctors, in the first trimester, the blood pressure falls by 5 to 15 points. However, it typically returns to normal after giving birth.   • Dehydration

  • Release of certain amount of blood vessels.
  • The uterus enlarges putting pressure on the large blood vessels.
  • Pooling of blood in the legs leading to restriction of the flow of blood to the brain.
  • Hypoglycemia and anemia can also lead to low blood pressure during pregnancy

Low Blood Pressure During Pregnancy – Treatment

Blood pressure usually comes back to the normal rate after giving birth. However, at times there are symptoms of hypotension which can be observed throughout the pregnancy. Here are a few things you can do in order to prevent low blood pressure:

  • In order to prevent anemia and low blood sugar levels, eat a healthy diet. Eat small meals at frequent intervals. Do not keep yourself hungry for a long period of time.
  • In order to avoid dehydration, drink plenty of water and fluids.
  • Do not sit or stand in a place for longer period of time.
  • It is recommended to lie down on the side, rather than lying on the back.
  • Exercise moderately. Walking and mild exercising can prevent the symptoms of low blood pressure during pregnancy.  Make sure you discuss any exercise with your doctor.
  • Visit your doctor regularly.

Low blood pressure during pregnancy is normal. If you are experiencing severe symptom of low blood pressure, consult your doctor immediately.
