Postpartum Bleeding

The bleeding experienced by a woman after childbirth is known as postpartum bleeding. After delivery, a woman can shed up to a liter of blood; however it depends on whether the delivery is cesarean or vaginal. In the case of cesarean bleeding, a woman can lose up to a liter and in the case of a vaginal delivery a woman can lose up to half a liter. It is termed as postpartum hemorrhage if the blood loss goes beyond these two values. This article focuses on the causes of postpartum bleeding.

Postpartum Bleeding – Causes

  • Postpartum bleeding is a natural process of eliminating excess blood from the body.
  • The placenta gets detached from the uterus leaving the blood vessels open after childbirth.
  • The open blood vessels cause postpartum bleeding. During the postpartum period, vaginal discharge along with the bleeding experienced is referred as lochia.
  • The bleeding stops immediately after the delivery, but then the uterus contracts to expel the placenta.
  • After childbirth the bleeding continues for two to six weeks. The bleeding is heavy compared to normal menstrual bleeding.
  • The bleeding is bright red in color and it is accompanied by small blood clots.
  • The discharge becomes pale after a few weeks, and you may observe yellowish-white vaginal discharge after a week or two.
  • It can result in a postpartum hemorrhage if the uterus fails to contract.
  • If part of the placenta is left in the body, it leads to a postpartum hemorrhage.

Risk Factors for Postpartum Bleeding

  • Early detachment of the placenta
  • Infection
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Trauma to the uterus
  • Vaginal delivery
  • Blood clotting
  • Labor pain

Dealing with Postpartum Bleeding

  • It is very troublesome for a pregnant woman to experience postpartum bleeding.
  • In order to manage normal postpartum bleeding, opt for a healthy diet and rest whenever possible.
  • One of the best ways to deal with postpartum bleeding is sleep, which will help you to recover from trauma and stress.
  • In order to improve your physical and mental health, eat a nutritious diet
  • In order to avoid urinary problems, urinate often.
  • In order to avoid the risk for infection, avoid using tampons during that period.

Drink plenty of water and eat healthy food during postpartum bleeding. In order to cope with postpartum bleeding effectively, stay cool and calm. If you observe any severe signs of postpartum bleeding, seek immediate medical help.
