Miscarriages in First Trimester

A pregnancy loss which occurs during the first twelve weeks of gestation is known as a first trimester miscarriage. Approximately 80% of pregnant women experience first trimester miscarriages.  There are three common types of first trimester miscarriages: missed miscarriage, blighted ovum and chemical pregnancy.

When the growth of the fetus stops but the pregnancy continues, this is known as a missed miscarriage. Blighted ovum is the second type of miscarriage and occurs when the gestational sac develops but there is no baby present. A chemical pregnancy is a pregnancy loss before the fertilized egg is properly implanted in the lining of the uterus.

All of these miscarriages occur for some reason. This article focuses on the causes, symptoms and treatment of miscarriages in the first trimester.

Miscarriages in the First Trimester – Causes

  • Chromosomal abnormalities in the baby are the most common cause of miscarriages during the first trimester. This happens when either the sperm cells or eggs have a fault. It may also happen due to improper implantation of the egg.
  • A pregnant woman might experience miscarriages in her first trimester if she is suffering from a hormonal imbalance or if she has any kind of infection or other underlying health problem.
  • An imbalanced diet, drinking alcohol and smoking may also lead to miscarriages in the first trimester.
  • Pregnancy after age 35 increases the risk of miscarriages.
  • If a woman has an accident or fall, it may also lead to a miscarriage in the first trimester.

Miscarriages in the First Trimester – Symptoms

  • Back pain is one of the most common symptoms of miscarriage in the first trimester
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Pain and  contractions every few minutes
  • Mucus discharge
  • Tissues and blood clots from the vagina
  • Bleeding with cramps
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Food aversions

Miscarriages in the First Trimester – Treatment

  • A woman usually requires no medical treatment if the pregnancy is at this early stage because the body removes the fetal tissues on its own.
  • Dilation and curettage is a medical procedure which is done if necessary to expel any remaining fetal tissues or put an end to bleeding. This procedure can be helpful because it also prevents the spread of any infection.
  • Emotional therapy is often needed for women who have undergone one or more miscarriages in the first trimester.

A majority of miscarriages occur in the first trimester due to chromosomal abnormalities. A woman cannot avoid this, but she can maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle to prevent other health problems that cause miscarriages in first the trimester.
