Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

Morning sickness during pregnancy is one of the most common symptoms experienced by a pregnant woman. It isn’t fun to feel sick to your stomach, but fortunately it isn’t dangerous to your health or the baby’s. Morning sickness is like a wave of nausea which may hit a pregnant woman at any time of the day. Many pregnant women also experience vomiting apart from nausea. Usually morning sickness will abate after the first month or two of pregnancy, but there are some women who experience it throughout the whole nine months. Here are some of the causes of morning sickness and ideas for dealing with, it if you do develop it.

Morning Sickness – Causes

  • During pregnancy the body of a pregnant woman undergoes a lot of physical and hormonal changes. The changes in hormone levels, such as that of HCG, give rise to the feeling of nausea resulting in morning sickness.
  • A hormone known as estrogen rapidly rises during early pregnancy which is one of the main causes of morning sickness.
  • A pregnant woman becomes sensitive towards certain odors, which leads to nausea, thus causing morning sickness.

Morning Sickness – How to deal with it

  • Before going to bed or as soon as you wake up, eat some saltine crackers as they are one of the effective ways to control morning sickness.
  • Eat small meals and snacks throughout the day, rather than a large lunch or dinner.
  • In order to get rid of nausea drink ginger tea or ginger ale.
  • Your obstetrician will recommend over the counter antacids which are safe to take during your pregnancy. Take only the recommended amount of them.
  • Get an adequate amount of rest.
  • Avoid spicy food and junk food
  • Eat foods which are rich in proteins and carbohydrates such as apple, milk, butter and nuts.
  • Avoid getting up to fast or making sudden moves.

In order to reduce morning sickness during pregnancy, you may also opt for acupressure. Keep yourself cool and stay in well ventilated areas, and away from toxic fumes of any variety. Consult a doctor if your nausea is severe.
