Anemia During Pregnancy

Anemia is a common problem experienced by women during pregnancy. It can cause severe complications for a pregnant woman, as well as her newborn child. When a person is found to have a deficiency of red blood cells, it means that he/she is suffering from anemia. It can happen to anyone and at any age, but pregnant women are more vulnerable to it. A lack of a nutritious diet can result in anemia, as well as smoking or drinking alcohol. This article focuses on causes and symptoms of anemia during pregnancy.

  • Iron deficiency may lead to anemia. During the last three months of pregnancy, women are more likely to suffer from anemia.
  • The baby requires red blood cells from the mother’s blood. A woman may become anemic when she does not consume the required amount of iron in her food in order to regain the lost red blood cells.
  • Another reason for anemia during pregnancy is a deficiency of folic acid. Folic acid is a B vitamin that is necessary for the health of the baby. In order to decrease the chances of having a baby with brain and spinal cord defects, a pregnant woman should eat food which contains folic acid.
  • Lack of vitamin B12 is another cause of anemia during pregnancy. Women who are vegetarians are more prone to this deficiency. This vitamin helps in the formation of blood cells. Blood loss, such as bleeding, hemorrhoids, or gastrointestinal bleeding may lead to anemia.

Anemia During Pregnancy—Symptoms

  • Fatigue or extreme tiredness
  • Paleness of the skin, palms, lips and nails
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Difficulty in breathing

Diagnosis and Treatment for Anemia During Pregnancy

  • Treatment of anemia during pregnancy differs from person to person.
  • Often, women are given supplements of vitamin B12. These supplements can only be taken twice daily because they may cause certain side effects that may lead to health problems.
  • In order to lower the risk of anemia, eat a nutritious and healthy diet. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Eat green leafy vegetables, chicken, rice, cereals and legumes.

Taking precautions to avoid anemia during pregnancy will help to result in the perfect health of the mother and the baby.
