  • A person who has prenatal massage training should do the massage.
  • These practitioners are aware of the areas to be massaged and the kinds of strokes that should be given during pregnancy.
  • Moreover, they may carry out the massage effectively and safely without any concerns and hassles.
  • During pregnancy, the breasts of a woman become swollen and tender so women prefer not to lieface down. During later stages of pregnancy, lying down on the back is also not recommended. Therefore, the massage therapist uses a special massage table for pregnant women. The table is made in such a way that it provides hollowed out areas with padding so that the breasts and belly may be accommodated into it. If such types of table are not available, then a pregnant woman may lie down on one side and a full length of a pillow should be given to support her body and legs.

Prenatal Massage – Techniques

  • For prenatal massage scented lotions or massage oil is used by the therapist. Massage therapists may also use non-fragrant oil or lotion if you are uncomfortable with the scent.
  • The massage starts from the base of the neck and moves down to back.
  • The pressure applied on prenatal massage is less compared to normal massage.
  • Due to the increasing size of the uterus and weight of the baby, the hips are under a lot of pressure.
  • Massaging this area would relieve the entire body from overall body stress.
  • During the first trimester, it is not recommended to go for abdominal massage because it may dislocate the placenta.
  • In order to give massage to the legs, start from the ankle and then move upward towards the thigh. The area between ankle and hip is rubbed with long stokes. Massaging inner thighs should be avoided.
  • The duration of the massage can be one hour or it can be for 15 minutes. If you feel any kind of stress or discomfort during the massage, ask the therapist to stop it.

Prenatal massage is safe for most women, but women who have diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach infections, or experience heavy discharge should avoid prenatal massage.
