Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

Developing varicose veins is a common problem experienced by many women during pregnancy. Varicose veins refer to enlarged or swollen veins, which usually occur on the legs and feet. However, varicose veins may occur in any part of the body, but legs are the most common part to be affected by varicose veins. This happens due to the defect in the valves or the vein wall. This article focuses on the causes and prevention of varicose veins during pregnancy.

Varicose Veins During Pregnancy – Causes

  • A woman undergoes a lot of hormonal changes during pregnancy. Due to the growing fetus a woman gains a considerable amount of weight. The weight gained by a pregnant woman puts pressure on the large vein on the right side of the body known as the inferior vena cava. This increases the pressure in the blood vessels of the legs resulting in varicose veins during pregnancy.
  • Having spider veins is another condition that one may face during pregnancy. Spider veins appear mainly on the arms, legs and on the surface of the skin. The veins look quite similar to a spider web, and they are red or blue in color. They result in increased flow of blood, and they are harmless. They may cause itching or discomfort during pregnancy.
  • Varicose veins cause heavy pain and sensation in the legs and a throbbing sensation in the lower legs.
  • They may also lead to swelling and muscle cramps in the lower legs.

Remedies for Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

Exercise:

In order to increase the flow of the blood, try to do regular exercise as much as you can. You may also go for a walk in order to improve the cardiovascular functioning of the body.

Diet:

Fruits and vegetables provide fiber to the body, so it is advisable to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables during pregnancy in order to get fiber. In order to get rid of varicose veins, a fiber diet is one of the most effective diets. Foods which are rich in fiber are flaxseed, whole grains, beans and cereals. Berries, grapes and onions are anti-oxidants, which help in fighting against varicose veins.

Massage:

In order to get relief from varicose veins, massage the affected area with rosemary oil. You may also massage the affected area with a mixture of essential oil and cypress oil.

Keep Moving:

It is always better to move from one place to another rather than standing in one spot for a long time. Do not cross your ankles or legs as it stops the circulation of the blood.

Elevate Feet:

You may lie down with your feet elevated above the level of the heart in order to improve the flow of the blood in your legs.

Rest:

Resting is one of the most effective ways to get rid of varicose veins during pregnancy. Rest as much as possible.

Prevention of Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

  • Exercise regularly. You may also do brisk walking if you do not want to do exercise.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Use a stool or box in order to rest your feet whenever you are sitting. If you are lying down keep a pillow under your feet.
  • While sitting do not cross your legs or ankles.
  • Do not stand or sit for a long period of time.
  • Always try to sleep on your left side. It will relieve the veins by decreasing the pressure on the veins in the legs or feet.

During pregnancy if the varicose veins become too painful or uncomfortable, consult a doctor immediately.
