Groin Pains During Pregnancy

Groin pains are mainly caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy. An increase in weight and the growing fetus may also result in groin pain during pregnancy. Here is what is happening when pregnant women experience groin pains:

Hormonal Changes:

During pregnancy hormonal changes are the most common cause of groin pain. During this time muscles and ligaments around the joints loosen and stretch, preparing the body for childbirth. It is normal to occasionally feel a little pain in the groin, hips and lower abdominal area.

Structural Changes in the Body:

The change in body weight and the growing baby will often result in groin and pelvic pain during pregnancy. Pregnant women may also experience discomfort in the lower abdominal area.  Maintaining a good posture will help alleviate muscle aches in the lower abdomen.

Round Ligament Pain:

This pain can be felt in the groin, pelvis and hips. The pain lasts for few seconds and it can be a sharp pain. The round ligament supports and surrounds the uterus in the pelvis. This round ligament gets stretched and thickens during pregnancy in order to support the growing uterus, resulting in lower abdomen and groin pains.

Tips for Managing Groin Pain

  • Wear comfortable shoes with adequate support for the rest of your body
  • Maintain a correct posture
  • Do regular exercise, such as yoga
  • Avoid standing for a prolonged period of time
  • Try to keep your legs in an elevated position while sitting
  • Apply ice or mild heat on the affected area
