Twin Pregnancy and Weight Gain

Tips on Gaining Weight:

It is difficult to gain the right amount of weight for women carrying twins. As the pregnancy progresses, you may find that you aren’t hungry as you used to be. This is mainly because your babies will push your stomach as they grow inside the womb. It results in limiting the amount you eat. Here is how you can gain your weight:

Eat diet rich in calories and nutrients:

These are easy to snack on and are rich in calories and nutrients .

  • Peanut butter.
  • Yogurt.
  • Nuts.

Eat small and frequent meals:

  • Try eating small meals frequently.
  • A mother can eat every 2 hours.
  • Never try to eat fast and full meals.

Drink Calories:

  • Fruit smoothies and milk shakes can increase the caloric intake.
  • These are very healthy and helps in weight gain easily.
  • They can be taken at any part of the day.

Vitamins and Minerals:

  • Vitamins and Minerals play a major role in the development of your babies.
  • It contributes to eyesight, hearing and mental development of the babies.
  • Here are some guide lines to follow for a women carrying twins.

Calcium:

Through out the pregnancy 1200 mg of calcium can be taken by the women.

Folic Acid:

It is very much essential for the growth of neural tube. The amount of folic acid to be taken by the women is 800 micro grams a day.

Iron:

As you are expecting twins, check your iron levels as there is an increased blood flow to the twins. The iron levels may drop and you may suffer from anemia. Ask your doctor and take iron supplements.

Fiber:

Women expecting twins should have fibre rich diet. They suffer from constipation frequently. Fibre supplements can be taken.

Protein:

Protein intake should be between 90 to 120 grams. The diet can include chicken, fish, soy based products or red meat.

Diary and Milk:

Milk and Diary and milk products are rich in calcium and a women expecting twins can take low fat milk, yogurt and cheese.

Fruits and Vegetables:

At least 6 servings of fruits and vegetables can be served.
They are rich at vitamins and minerals.

Unsaturated Fats:

A women expecting twins need to take the right amounts of fats to remain healthy and strong. Two to four servings of mayonnaise, peanut butter or vegetable oils can be given to the mother.

Stay Hydrated:

Hydration during pregnancy is an essential thing during twin pregnancy. Drink 2 quarts of water every day. Keep a bottle of water with you where ever you go.
