Pregnancy and Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is the most common problem faced by all pregnant women. 70-80% of the women suffer with nausea and vomiting. It usually occurs in the initial stages of pregnancy and can remain throughout pregnancy. It’s a natural phenomenon that occurs due to the hormonal changes in the body but in some patients it is extreme and leads to hyperemesis gravid arum where a women goes into fluid electrolyte imbalance, weight loss and alkalosis. When such signs arise, inform the doctor immediately. According to the recent studies, morning sickness is regarded as a positive sign initially as it is a good indicator to know whether the placenta is growing well.

Causes of Morning Sickness:

The exact cause is unknown but it mainly occurs due to the hormonal imbalance. The following are the causes:

HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin):

During early pregnancy, HCG levels increase and at the same time the nauseated feeling also rises. Though there is no proof linking the two, it is a major suspect as there is a coincidence between the rise of HCG and nausea.


This hormone plays a vital role during pregnancy and therefore is regarded as one of the causes for morning sickness.

Other causes:

Some odors are highly sensitive and they trigger the gag reflex. In some cases, a bacteria called Helico bacter pylori causes severe morning sickness.

How to Reduce the Effects of Morning Sickness:

The following steps are helpful in reducing the effects of morning sickness:

  • Take rest during the day.
  • To avoid fluid imbalance in the body, drink small amounts of water or fruit juices.
  • Eat small and frequent meals.
  • Do not eat foods that cause nausea.
  • Never drink fluids along with meals. Drink fluids half an hour before or after having your meals.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Caffeine and alcohol intake should be stopped.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Keep the windows open to get fresh air.
  • Consuming Lemon juice helps combat morning sickness.
  • Avoid spicy foods.
  • To avoid nausea, eat salty chips before meals.
  • Eat crackers.
  • Increase the intake of protein in your diet.
  • Ask your doctor for anti-emetics if the nausea and vomiting do not reduce.
