Facts about Teen Pregnancy

In the United States of America, 1 of every 10 births involves a teenage mother. According to a research study done by the Guttmacher Institute in September 2006, the following are statisticson teen pregnancy in the United States.

1.  Three-quarters of a million teenagers between the age group of 15-19 become pregnant every year.

2.Few teenage mothers plan for pregnancy:

82% of teen pregnancies are unintended. Pregnancy in teens accounts for 20% of unplanned pregnancies annually.

3.  Two-thirds of pregnancy in teens occur between the ages of 18-19 years.

4.Teenage mothers account for 11% of births in the United States.

5.Among the teen pregnancies, 14% end in miscarriage and 57% end in a live birth.

6.Nearly 1/3 of teenagers opt for an abortion. Twenty-nine percent of teenage pregnancies end in abortion.

7.Black teenagers have a higher pregnancy rate than do Caucasian women.

Of the black population, young women between 15-19 years are more likely to become pregnant; i.e., 134 among 1,000 teens. In Hispanics, the pregnancy rates are slightly lower;  i.e., 131 among 1,000 and is followed by non-Hispanic whites i.e., 48/1000.

8.Teenage mothers are less likely to attend college:

Though teen mothers are most likely to complete high school, and earn their GEDs, teenagers who are pregnant do not usually attend college..

9. In the United States teen pregnancy rates are higher than in other developed countries:

In the U.S., pregnancy rates are twice that of Wales or Canada and England, and eight times more than in Japan or in the Netherlands.

10.Teen pregnancy declined during 1991-2005 but increased again:

Teen pregnancy rateswere highest in the year 1990 with an estimation of 116.9 per 1,000 births, and an all-time high birth rate of 61.8 per 1,000 in 1991. Pregnancy rates dropped to 75.4 per 1,000 by 2002; i.e., a decline of 36%. According to a December 2007 report from theCenter for Disease Control, teen pregnancy increased by 3% from 2005 to 2006.
