What Causes Shortness Of Breath During Pregnancy?

Shortness of breath is felt by most pregnant women as they advance in their pregnancy period. There are many reasons for this condition to appear. The most common is the increased levels of hormones in the body.

Causes Of Shortness Of Breath During Pregnancy:

  • Actually, when a woman becomes pregnant, her need for oxygen intake increases. In order to satisfy this growth in demand of oxygen, the body increases the level of the hormone called progesterone in the body.
  • This hormone triggers the respiratory center located in the brain. This respiratory center initiates deep breathing every so often. This deep breathing is often felt as shortness of breath.
  • Another reason for shortness of breath can be that as the pregnancy progresses, the size of the uterus also increases. This increase in size of the uterus puts pressure on the diaphragm. As a result of this, the lungs take longer to expand and deflate. This results in shortness of breath.

Tips To Relieve Shortness Of Breath:

Here are a few tips which can be followed to relieve yourself from shortness of breath.

  • Make sure that you sit straight and use proper posture while standing. This will help in relieving the pressure from the diaphragm and also give your lungs the proper space to expand and deflate.
  • Never try to overdo things. This does not mean that you stop your regular work out. The only thing you have to remember while doing it is that you must not press yourself to perform the activity. Take your time to carry out the activity. Relax and do the activity slowly and conveniently.
  • Always eat healthy, so that you can maintain an appropriate weight gain. Excess of eating or excess of exercise can increase the problem of shortness of breath.
  • Intake of fluids in adequate amounts can also prevent shortness of breath. Avoid the intake of cold drinks and drinks with caffeine in them.
