The early signs of pregnancy start appearing in the first trimester of the pregnancy. Heartburn is one such symptom, which appears in the first trimester of the pregnancy. The reason for heartburn to appear during the pregnancy period is the high levels of relaxin and progesterone. The elevated levels of these hormones result in heartburn. Actually, this condition relaxes the gastrointestinal lining, which decreases the process of digestion. As a result of this, indigestion, bloating and heartburn take place.

The cause of heartburn during pregnancy is usually the elevated levels of hormones during the pregnancy. The high levels of hormones relax the muscles of the digestive system, thus slowing down the process of digestion. The slowdown in the process of digestion results in bloating, indigestion and heartburn.

Tips To Prevent Heartburn During Pregnancy:

Here are a few tips which can be followed to prevent heartburn during pregnancy:

  • Quit smoking if you indulge in such a habit. This helps in getting rid of heartburn and also gives you a healthy baby.
  • Eat smaller meals and at quick intervals. This will help in easy digestion of food. If you eat all at one single time, it will result in overeating. Moreover, proper digestion of the entire meal is not possible in such a state.
  • Avoid the intake of spicy foods, chocolate, coffee or fatty acids. Intake of these items results in headaches and heartburn.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes.  Always go for loose fitting clothing as tight fittings put pressure on the stomach.
