What Is Pseudocyesis?

Pseudocyesis, or false pregnancy, is the condition in which all the related symptoms of pregnancy are present but the actual pregnancy does not exist. This condition is known to arise from an emotional state in which a woman has a strong desire to become a mother. In such women, internal conflict brings about some hormonal changes, which result in the symptoms of “False Pregnancy”.

  • Cease in menstruation
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Morning sickness

Causes ofPseudocyesis

The causes of Pseudocyesis include:

  • Involvement of hypothalmic, psychogenic, cortical and endocrine factors. There a complex involvement of these factors in this condition.
  • Psychological aspects which consist of emotional conflict, generally related to an intense desire of becoming a mother and the same time an intense fear of becoming pregnant.Biomechanical changes, such as weight gain, constipation, and movement of intestinal gas also appear as the result of above mentioned stress.

Treatment ofPseudocyesis

An ultrasound can confirm whether the pregnancy is false or true. In the case that there is no heartbeat but all the other symptoms of pregnancy are present,the diagnosis is pseudocyesis. To ensure that this condition does not reoccur, doctors tend to test for hormonal imbalance, as this is a common cause for the condition. Patients can also seek the help of a psychiatrist who can aid in the removal of any emotional conflict, thus curing the underlying psychological issues.
