Cracked Nipples

Cracked and sore nipples are common ailments that new breastfeeding mothers face. ┬áIf you feel pain while feeding your baby, don’t ignore it. Cracked and sore nipples can be a hindrance in the breastfeeding process, but can be overcome.

Causes of Cracked and Sore Nipples:

Cracked and sore nipples happen for a variety of reasons. The most common reason for cracked or sore nipples is an improper latch when feeding. Also, some babies use their mother’s breasts for comfort, and therefore may not latch properly. Finally, make sure that you don’t remove the baby by pulling him off when he has a strong latch, as this can also cause sore or cracked nipples. Instead, place your finger into the baby’s mouth to break the latch before removing him from the breast.

Treatment of Cracked and Sore Nipples:

  • Breast milk is a skin softener and has the capacity to heal your cracked and sore nipples. Allow your nipples to air-dry.
  • Avoid wearing clothes which can irritate your nipples.
  • Apply creams, gels, and oils made specifically for breastfeeding mothers on your nipples and breast to keep them moist and clean.
  • Do not stop feeding even if your nipples are cracked or sore. It is a condition you can get through and it has no affect on the baby’s nutrition.
  • Don’t favor one breast over the other, or you may face engorgement on one side. Be sure to always feed the baby from both breasts at each feeding.
  • Never remove the crusts of dried milk from the cracked and sore nipples as it can worsen the situation.
