What Are Thrush Nipples?

Thrush is an infection of the fungus called Candida albicans. This fungus either appears on the nipples or on the tissues of the breast. The major symptom for this condition is excessive pain of the nipple and the breast.

Symptoms Of Thrush:

  • Pain in the nipple and /or breast.
  • Nipple pain is ¬†often accompanied by itching, burning or stinging, which can be mild to severe.
  • Nipples can become tender to touch, and even the slightest touch by hand or clothing can result in pain and itching.
  • Breast pain typically radiates throughout the breast, or it can be a shooting pain.
  • The pain in the breast and the nipples will be noticed before and after feeding.

Signs of Thrush:

  • The nipple will become bright pink in color and can become cracked.
  • The areola can become dry, flaky and red.
  • A white rash may appear on the nipple area.
  • The symptoms of the thrush will also be seen on the mouth of the baby. The baby’s mouth will have a thick, white coating on the inner side of the cheeks and on the upper portion of the tongue. Also, the baby’s bottom will have a red rash surrounded by red spots.
