What is Breast Engorgement?

Breast engorgement is a condition in which the breasts overfill with milk. This condition is often due to a greater supply of milk than the infant is demanding. The various causes include:

  • First arrival of milk, a few days after birth
  • When the mother cannot nurse regularly
  • When the mother or the baby stop breastfeeding suddenly
  • Whenever the baby’s demand decreases, which can happen after the baby begins eating solid food or if the baby is ill and has a poor appetite

Causes Of Severe Breast Engorgement:

In case of severe breast engorgement, the overfilled breasts swell and become very painful. This leads to severe breast engorgement. Causes include:

  • If the mother waits too long to feed her baby
  • Feedings are not frequent enough
  • Feedings are done in too small of an amount and do not empty the breast completely

Symptoms Of Breast Engorgement:

Symptoms of breast engorgement are:

  • Breasts become swollen, painful and firm
  • In case of severe breast engorgement, the breast is heavily swollen, will become hard, warm, shiny and slightly lumpy to the touch
  • Nipples can become flattened. Or the area around the nipple can harden, making it difficult for the baby to latch on
  • A mild fever can develop
  • Tense and swollen lymph nodes will be noticed in the armpits

Cabbage Treatment For Breast Engorgement:

Cabbage is considered the best medicine for curing breast engorgement. Keep cold cabbage leaves in the refrigerator, wrapping leaves around the swollen breasts and any sore, surrounding tissue.  Leave the nipple exposed and change leaves if they become wilted or warm.  Green cabbage contains sinigrin rapine, mustard oil, oxylates, magnesium and sulphur heterosides, which are known to reduce swelling and irritation.  Women who have used this treatment consider it a miracle cure. The mixture of these ingredients decreases tissue congestion by opening small blood vessels.  This improves blood flow in and out of the breast area, allowing the body to absorb any excess fluids.
