Pregnancy Migraines

Migraines during pregnancy are very common. Most of the ladies bearing a child face this problem. The exact reason for this is not yet known but it can be due to the changes evolved in the pathways of the nerves, blood flow in the brain, and neurochemicals.

Few researches believe that cells of the brain release some chemicals which stimulate the vessels of the brain and results in their swelling, and pain in response. The hormone, estrogen can also be one of the reasons for migraine pain.

How to Treat Severe Migraines During Pregnancy:-

The treatment of severe migraines during pregnancy includes the following:

Some pain relievers which do not harm pregnancy can be taken, such as Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, and Naproxen, just to name a few of them. These do not stimulate bleeding during pregnancy.
Ergotamine can work specifically for migraines but they can stimulate labor pains and result in the premature birth of your baby.
Triptans are also beneficial for migraine but they are known to cause birth defects. So they must be avoided. In a word, consult with your doctor before taking any medication to treat a migraine.

Preventive Migraine Treatment during Pregnancy:-

Migraines must be handled carefully during pregnancy. Believe it or not medications like Propanolol, Antelonol and Labetalol are safe for treating migraines during pregnancy. However, they must be used under a doctor’s care.

So, as soon as you have the headache, make sure you consult with your gynecologist so that your migraines do not add risk to your baby. If you take wrong medications it might cause life-long health issues to your baby.
